Thumbelina

A new version of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about the girl who can easily sleep inside a walnut shell.

Created in collaboration with Alex Byrne, the creative force behind "Pinocchio" and "The Bear That Wasn’t":

"Thumbelina" is a journey into a universe where everything in nature is viewed from the perspective of someone the size of a thumb.

It features raging elements, gigantic plants, and the strangest of creatures. And a girl who is swept away by the current, abducted through the air, imprisoned underground—and completely manipulated and dominated by the beings she encounters along the way.

So: How does one find the freedom to decide for oneself where in the world to go?

A gritty, moving, and at times humorous tale in which poetic purity and beauty vie with Gothic eeriness and crude, earthly mediocrity — entirely in the spirit of Hans Christian Andersen.

Told and performed by an ensemble of four actors — utilizing music, puppets, and essential theatrical magic.

This co-production has given us the opportunity to work on a slightly larger scale than our usual touring format. Consequently, the production requires a longer setup time and is scheduled for runs at theaters lasting longer than just a day or two.
